The Philippines refuses to be 'intimidated' but also avoids initiating conflict amid tensions with China.

Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr has reiterated his country's commitment to seeking peaceful resolutions amid escalating tensions with China in the South China Sea. Following a recent clash between Philippine Navy and Chinese Coast Guard vessels near Second Thomas Shoal, Marcos emphasized that while the Philippines remains steadfast in its stance against intimidation, it does not seek conflict.
During a visit to the Philippine South China Sea forces headquarters on Palawan island, Marcos praised the bravery of approximately 80 sailors involved in a critical resupply mission, where one sailor lost his right thumb during the confrontation. The incident, which occurred 200km from Palawan, involved Chinese vessels reportedly wielding machetes, axes, and hammers, resulting in injuries to Filipino personnel and damage to military boats.

Despite the tense situation, Marcos refrained from directly naming China in his remarks but affirmed the Philippines' commitment to upholding its national interests and rights under international law. He condemned any attempts to intimidate or oppress the Philippines, asserting the nation's resolve to defend itself while advocating for peaceful resolutions to maritime disputes.

Chinese officials have yet to respond to Marcos's statements. The incident underscores ongoing regional tensions over territorial claims in the South China Sea, where both countries, among others, have competing interests.
